CW Drummer's Call Weekend - New Videos

Last year we were not able to attend the drummer's call weekend.  The first time in our history when we were tied up with other projects that demanded our attention over this event.

  This year we not only attended the drummer's call weekend, we also as always shot plenty of video.  We are getting ready to process the videos soon.  This year we changed all our technology.  We shot over half the show on Saturday in ultra high 720P HD video.  Ultra high 720p is like low 1080i only better but not as good as 1080p.

  The other half we shot using a DVI camera in widescreen mode.  We will process all video in full 720p mode though.  This year we will be changing up how the videos will be shown.  In years past we cut the video for each tune played.  This year we will be showing the entire field march for each fife and drum corp on the grounds.  Also, due to feedback, we will no longer put on long front end openings or endings.

  We are sponsoring each video though in order to help defray the costs of shooting, production and hosting expenses.  That means that we are putting in advertising on each video.  The advertising however will match up with the videos as the ads will be based on historic content.  We expect to start having the first videos up by early next week.

More than 400 years after America's first permanent English settlement rose from the ground, archaeologists are combining local clay, loam and black needle rush grass in an experimental effort to recreate the unique method used to construct some of the colony's earliest buildings.

The project blends archaeological evidence gleaned fromJamestown with research into the traditional mud-and-stud building techniques of Lincolnshire, England, which was the home of such key settlers asCapt. John Smith and carpenter William Laxton.

It also requires Preservation Virginia archaeologist David Givens and his Historic Jamestowne students to learn on the job, employing their eyes and fingertips in a trial-and-error attempt to unlock the lost secrets of the simple but age-old tradition of building with mud.

"We can talk about the ingredients and the recipe all day long. We know the materials used in the mud-and-stud buildings here pretty well," Givens says.

"What we don't know much about is the implementation. This is a lost art. So we're trying to use this reconstruction process to get back into the mindset of the colonists and see how it was done."

Led by project director William M. Kelso, archaeologists unearthed their first fragments of James Fort's early mud-and-stud buildings during the excavation of a long barracks-like structure back in the mid-1990s.

They knew right away the otherwise ordinary-looking clods of clay were significant because of the unusual textures impressed into their sides.

"All we could see were the marks left by the reeds and the studs," Kelso says. "And now we're using them to help us with the experimental reconstruction."

Grand Illumination In Colonial Williamsburg

We choose to wait to kick off this site until the right time. That time is the Grand Illumination that happened tonight in Colonial Williamsburg. This is the official kick off of the Holiday seasons in this area. Kind of like the festival of lights in other areas, or the lighting of the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center in New York City.


Tonight's fireworks display was one of the best in years. We normally like to take a lot of pictures of the fireworks, but then you miss a lot of the show. The Grand Illumination is always the First Sunday of December every year. There is no admission fee. Parking is a bit of a problem and the walk to the events areas can be rather long. Planning ahead of time is a must for the best experience. The Fife and Drum Corp's played for about a half hour before the fireworks and then the Scottish Bag Pipes played afterwards. The fireworks were at three different locations. The Governor's Palace, the Magazine and the Capitol building. Each location has it's own unique display.


The streets were lit with fires. The head count at this event was about 30,000 people. The traffic is always so much fun to maneuver around once the event is over. Shops remain open for Holiday shopping choices and story tellers abound. The Taverns are open to serve meals and they serve refreshments to those interested while the events are going on. This is one of the busiest times of the year in Colonial Williamsburg. Finding lodging is near impossible if you come in at the last minute without reservations. This event always books months in advanced and the best rooms are booked a year in advance.


A great number of people book to be here just before Thanksgiving and stay until just after this event. Thanksgiving in this area is just an incredible feast. But we will cover that next year and get you ready for the event well in advance and help you find the best places and deals for a place to stay and a place to eat. Now the above video has been recently added to this post.  We realize that it's a 4th of July video and not from the Grand Illumination, however, the fireworks are very similar in nature.
