The American Political Ideal - Every American SHould Read This

The above was a free giveaway comic back in 1950 by the National Association of Manufacturers.  It is probably more useful today than it was then.  We are sure that there are many in politics today who will hate to see this comic book recirculated.  It sounds all too familiar these days.   Free downloads are available from our SlideShare site on this comic book.  Also, feel free to embed this into your website or share it everywhere.

Colonial Williamsburg Fife And Drum Drummer's Call Weekend 2013 HD Video

We just finished getting the first video up from the Drummers Call Weekend 2013 at Colonial Williamsburg.  We have a lot of video to process yet and will be getting up more as soon as possible.  This year we shot most of the event in HD. The HD processing takes longer to produce than standard video.  We also have numerous pictures from the event that we also will be posting soon.  The sound quality is good but is low.  Just turn up your sound for these videos.  We were far enough away that the sound didn't come through as well as we would have liked.

Hampton, Virginia Under Siege - Attacks Are Eminent

Blackbeard and his band of pirates are invading Hampton, Virginia this weekend.  June 1st and 2nd, 2013.  Downtown Hampton will be overrun by pirates from all over the nation.  Everyone is in for a great time as this band of pirates work with a twist.  These folks are actually historical interpreters.  The events held each day are both entertaining as well as educational.  Pirating in certain respects was an economic necessity during the 17th century period in history.

At times, it was even legal as pirating was used as a way to defeat one's enemies on the open waters.  This is one of the largest events in Hampton Roads each year and it's no wonder why.  Pirates re create encampments in one of the parks of the area giving the illusion of stepping back in time.

Each campsite has the look and feel of the 17th century. No modern gadgets are seen by the public.  No cell phones or tablets.  No grills or flash lights.  Lanterns are used for lighting at night and camp fires are built and used for cooking foods.

Numerous stages are set up within a 4 block radius and there are a multitude of entertainers always playing on at least two stages at any one time.  Entertainers move around the area setting up and then playing the next show throughout each day.

Pictured left is Darcy Nair who has been a favorite at these events for many years.     She is seen here playing the hammered dulcimer.

Cap'n Pern, one of the original founders of this event and also Blackbeard's Crew, will be making a guest appearance on Saturday but is unable to participate this year due to health reasons.  He's going to be surely missed as he is one of the most dynamic individuals behind the entire ordeal.

Now there is an inside rumor that has it that Blackbeard's ghost is often seen at night during this yearly event.  You won't catch any of the pirates talking about it as his ghost is not a friendly sort.

The rumor has it that he looks for his treasure that he left behind and has never been found.  It has further been rumored that there are many pirates that do not come back because they saw Blackbeard's ghost.

So don't miss the fun and excitement.  Did we mention the fireworks?  Saturday night will witness some amazing fireworks in the Hampton area as part of the celebration.  Don't miss out.

CW Drummer's Call Weekend - New Videos

Last year we were not able to attend the drummer's call weekend.  The first time in our history when we were tied up with other projects that demanded our attention over this event.

This year we not only attended the drummer's call weekend, we also as always shot plenty of video.  We are getting ready to process the videos soon.  This year we changed all our technology.  We shot over half the show on Saturday in ultra high 720P HD video.  Ultra high 720p is like low 1080i only better but not as good as 1080p.

The other half we shot using a DVI camera in widescreen mode.  We will process all video in full 720p mode though.  This year we will be changing up how the videos will be shown.  In years past we cut the video for each tune played.  This year we will be showing the entire field march for each fife and drum corp on the grounds.  Also, due to feedback, we will no longer put on long front end openings or endings.

We are sponsoring each video though in order to help defray the costs of shooting, production and hosting expenses.  That means that we are putting in advertising on each video.  The advertising however will match up with the videos as the ads will be based on historic content.  We expect to start having the first videos up by early next week.

WTLN - Early Jamestown's Way With Mud

Jamestown Rediscovery Experimental Archarology
Joshua Graml of Colonial Williamsburg mus inside a inside the barracks building at Jamestown. Archaeologhists and students are building with "mud and stud" structures similar to those unearthed from the remains of the 1608 fort. (Joe Fudge, Daily Press / July 10, 2012

More than 400 years after America's first permanent English settlement rose from the ground, archaeologists are combining local clay, loam and black needle rush grass in an experimental effort to recreate the unique method used to construct some of the colony's earliest buildings.
The project blends archaeological evidence gleaned fromJamestown with research into the traditional mud-and-stud building techniques of Lincolnshire, England, which was the home of such key settlers asCapt. John Smith and carpenter William Laxton.
It also requires Preservation Virginia archaeologist David Givens and his Historic Jamestowne students to learn on the job, employing their eyes and fingertips in a trial-and-error attempt to unlock the lost secrets of the simple but age-old tradition of building with mud.

"We can talk about the ingredients and the recipe all day long. We know the materials used in the mud-and-stud buildings here pretty well," Givens says.
"What we don't know much about is the implementation. This is a lost art. So we're trying to use this reconstruction process to get back into the mindset of the colonists and see how it was done."
Led by project director William M. Kelso, archaeologists unearthed their first fragments of James Fort's early mud-and-stud buildings during the excavation of a long barracks-like structure back in the mid-1990s.
They knew right away the otherwise ordinary-looking clods of clay were significant because of the unusual textures impressed into their sides.
"All we could see were the marks left by the reeds and the studs," Kelso says. "And now we're using them to help us with the experimental reconstruction."
